Abstract

Background: The lips are highly sensitive to environmental exposure and require protection to maintain moisture. Lip balms containing SPF provide both moisturizing effects and protection against sun-induced damage. Aloe vera (Aloe vera L.) gel is a promising natural ingredient due to its lignin and flavonoid content, which help prevent dehydration and provide UV protection.

Objective:  This study aimed to formulate Aloe vera gel lip balms and evaluate their SPF values.

Methods:  The method included formulating lip balm preparations with varying concentrations of Aloe vera gel, followed by physical quality tests covering organoleptic properties, homogeneity, pH, melting point, and spreadability, and continued with SPF value determination.

Results:  The results of the physical quality evaluation showed that all lip balm formulations containing 0%, 30%, 35%, and 40% Aloe vera gel met the established physical quality standards for organoleptic properties, homogeneity, pH, melting point, and spreadability. The SPF value of the lip balm with 0% Aloe vera gel was 3.078, indicating minimal protection. The 30%, 35%, and 40% concentrations had SPF values of 19.238, 20.672, and 22.399, respectively, indicating ultra protection.

Conclusion:  Lip balm formulations containing Aloe vera gel at concentrations of 0%, 30%, 35%, and 40% met the quality requirements for good lip balm preparations and demonstrated SPF values with ultra protection
