Abstract

Background: Dysmenorrhea is a common gynecological problem among reproductive-age women, with high prevalence among female university students. Lifestyle factors such as fast food and caffeinated beverage consumption are suspected to be associated with dysmenorrhea. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between fast food and caffeinated beverage consumption with the incidence of dysmenorrhea among medical students at Prima Indonesia University.

Methods: This cross-sectional study used an analytical observational quantitative approach. A total of 316 female students were selected using purposive sampling. Data collection was conducted through questionnaires including demographic characteristics, Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ), caffeinated beverage consumption questionnaire, Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10), and dysmenorrhea assessment. Data analysis used Chi-Square test for bivariate analysis and multiple logistic regression for multivariate analysis.

Results: The prevalence of dysmenorrhea was 86.4%. Bivariate analysis showed all independent variables were significantly associated with dysmenorrhea (p<0.05): fast food consumption (p<0.001), caffeinated beverage consumption (p<0.001), BMI (p<0.001), stress level (p<0.001), and menstrual cycle (p=0.019). Multivariate analysis showed fast food consumption was the most dominant risk factor (OR=11.667; 95% CI: 2.971-45.802), followed by stress level (OR=8.176; 95% CI: 2.579-25.925), caffeine consumption (OR=7.293; 95% CI: 2.401-22.151), BMI (OR=3.435; 95% CI: 1.035-11.402), and menstrual cycle (OR=2.683; 95% CI: 1.029-6.995). The model explained 48.7% of the variation in dysmenorrhea incidence.

Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between fast food and caffeinated beverage consumption with dysmenorrhea incidence. Fast food consumption is the most dominant risk factor. It is recommended that female students reduce their consumption of fast food and caffeinated beverages and manage stress well to lower the risk of dysmenorrhea
