Abstract

Preoperative anxiety is a common emotional response experienced by patients undergoing surgical procedures. This condition arises due to uncertainty about the procedure, fear of pain, potential complications, anaesthesia, and even the possibility of death. Aromatherapy and guided imagery are alternative approaches that may help reduce anxiety. This literature review aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the combination of lavender aromatherapy and guided imagery in reducing preoperative anxiety. This literature review utilised the Google Scholar database, focusing on articles published within the last five years—the search strategy employed keywords related to preoperative anxiety, aromatherapy, and guided imagery. Articles were then selected based on predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria according to the study needs. This literature review identified 10 articles relevant to the theme out of a total of 1,514 retrieved articles. This literature review used the PRISMA diagram for article identification and the PICOT table for critical appraisal of the selected studies. Lavender aromatherapy and guided imagery therapy are non-pharmacological interventions that can be used to help reduce anxiety in preoperative patients. These approaches may serve as complementary alternatives to support patients' psychological readiness before surgical procedures, alongside pharmacological therapy.
